Understanding air pollution

Air pollution is a public health emergency: it causes 8 million deaths a year and costs the global economy $8 trillion. Pollutants like PM2.5 and NO2 harm nearly every organ in the body, and in cities such as London, Delhi and Dhaka air quality can drop to hazardous levels. Understanding your exposure is the first step to taking action.

Why we need cleaner air

Cleaner air means longer, healthier lives – and it also helps tackle climate change, create fairer communities and boost our economies. Yet most people don't realise the scale of the problem: 99% of the world population breathes “unsafe air”.

Why is it important?

Invisible particles in polluted air penetrate deep into our lungs, heart, blood and brain. They cause respiratory disease and heart conditions, reduce athletic performance, and shorten life expectancy.

Major pollutants

PM2.5 — fine particulate matter

Tiny particles created by vehicles burning fuel and braking. They worsen heart and lung disease, and can trigger heart attacks and strokes. The WHO recommends a daily limit of 15 micrograms per cubic metre.

PM10 — coarse particulate matter

Coarse dust particles from roads, construction and industry. They irritate the eyes, nose and airways, and can aggravate asthma and bronchitis. The WHO recommends a daily limit of 45 micrograms per cubic metre.

NO2 — nitrogen dioxide

A toxic gas created when we burn fossil fuels in engines. It causes shortness of breath, inflames the lungs, and weakens immunity — especially harmful for people with asthma. The WHO recommends a daily limit of 25 micrograms per cubic metre.

O3 — ozone

Ozone forms when sunlight reacts with traffic fumes. High levels reduce lung function and make physical effort feel harder. The WHO recommends a peak-season limit of 60 micrograms per cubic metre.

SO2 — sulphur dioxide

Sulphur dioxide from burning coal and oil irritates the airways and can trigger asthma symptoms, particularly during exercise. The WHO recommends a daily limit of 40 micrograms per cubic metre.
